SACRAMENTO - On March 25 and 26, the Department of Homeland Security / Federal Emergency Management Agency, in coordination with the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services Urban Search and Rescue Canine Program will be conducting a certification process for its canine teams at the Florin Perkins Landfill Located at 4201 Florin Perkins Rd. This two day training event will be testing and evaluating the handlers and their dogs in scenarios that are as close to real incidents as possible including collapsed structures, rubble piles, and assorted confined spaces.

This testing draws canines and canine handlers from around the nation in attempts to receive certification as a canine team. The canine teams have proven to be the most valuable tool available when it comes to searching and locating trapped victims in a disaster situation. Their ability to locate victims that are trapped due to man-made or natural disasters is incomparable. They are capable of searching large areas (10,000 square feet) in just minutes with a high degree of accuracy. These search teams, when qualified, serve not only as a local resource, but could also be deployed nationally and internationally.

The Canine Program was started by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (OES) and has since been adopted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for their National Urban Search and Rescue Program. California Task Force 7, the Urban Search and Rescue Team in Sacramento, will be hosting this weekends event. Task Force 7 is comprised of the Sacramento Fire Department, Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, El Dorado County Fire Protection District, West Sacramento Fire Department, Elk Grove CSD Fire Department, and Folsom Fire Department.

All media is invited to attend this training event on Saturday, March 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
