| SACRAMENTO – On November 30, 2005, Sacramento Fire Department Captain Gay Jones, 54, underwent a procedure to donate her kidney to her sister at the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver. Captain Jones kept the preparations for her procedure under wraps except for her friend who had experience in live donor transplants, Chief Dan Haverty of the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.
Today, Captain Gay Jones will be surprised when she arrives to a meeting to find Fire Chief Joe Cherry and Chief Dan Haverty along with several colleagues for a presentation of a plaque that was sent to the Sacramento Fire Department from her sister. The plaque has a picture of Gay Jones and her sister embracing just days after the surgery. The inscription on the plaque is a motto used by the Live Donor Transplant program “Live long, live strong, donate life”. Gay Jones has been a member of the Sacramento Fire Department since 1981. In 2000 she was elected to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District Board and is still an active board member. Her sister, Hope Jones Alger, is a retired Lt. Col. Of the US Army and a veteran of the Gulf War. All media is welcome to attend the presentation of the plaque today. |
