| SACRAMENTO – The Sacramento Fire Department responded to the Sacramento River today after reports of a man who jumped 30 feet off of the Delta King landing into the river. The man was fortunate to have come across utility pipes that run from the dock to the Delta King, where he was able to stop himself from continuing to head downstream. Engine Companies One and Two, and Truck Company Two immediately put a plan together to get the man safely from the rapid current back to shore.
As Fire Fighters approached the man clinging to the pipes in the water between the Delta King and the dock, they noticed three civilians had climbed down to assist. Two men were clinging to his clothing and another was trying to keep the man’s head above water. Fire Fighters quickly climbed down and assisted two of the civilians that came to the man’s aid back to safety. Fire Fighters continued to evaluate his mental and medical condition while others began creating a rope system to raise the man from the water. A seat and chest harness, and life jacket were placed on the man while a rope was attached to an overhead walkway as a high pick-point. The Sacramento Public Safety Boat was positioned downstream in case anyone broke loose and got taken away by the current. Three Fire Fighters began pulling the rope and the man was lifted out of the water and up to the dock successfully. The man was transported by Sacramento Fire Department Medic 2 to a local hospital for further evaluation. |
