SACRAMENTO – Sacramento area Fire Fighters were called to the American River just past midnight to search for a man who reportedly jumped off of the I-5 bridge. Sacramento Fire’s Truck Company Two was able to spot a man in the water beneath the bridge clinging to a tree and was able to secure him in place with a rescue rope. Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Boat 106 was able to quickly grab the man from the water and bring him safely to shore.

The man was reportedly traveling southbound on I-5 in a vehicle with another person. For unknown reasons, the vehicle stopped on the freeway and he jumped approximately 30 feet to the water.

Although the rescue operations went smoothly and the man was quickly spotted and removed from the water, he placed himself and every rescuer in the vicinity of the water in harms way. The currents and the debris of the river are extremely unpredictable because of the recent storms. It is advisable that everyone stay away from the waterways while water levels remain high.
