SACRAMENTO – This morning at 8:03 a.m. the Sacramento Fire Department responded to reports of a house fire at 74 Park Vista Circle. Engine Company 11 arrived minutes later and reported a house that was engulfed with flames with the fire beginning to threaten the house next door. A second alarm assignment was added to the fire and two females were transported to a hospital for treatment of minor smoke inhalation.

A mother and daughter were home this morning both still asleep when a chair in the living room of the house caught fire. The mother stated that she was sleeping on the couch when the flames and smell of smoke awakened her. She said she attempted to go get a fire extinguisher in the garage but it was inaccessible, her next action was to wake her daughter and get her out of the house. The mother stated she had placed an electric portable space heater on a small stool next to the chair and was using it for the first time this season.

A Sacramento Fire Department Investigator is currently sifting through the remains of the house to find evidence of the space heater or anything else that may have contributed to the cause of the fire. The loss of the house and its contents is estimated at $250,000.

The response from the Sacramento Fire Department included five Engine Companies, three Truck Companies, two Medic Units and 8 additional command and support staff. A mutual aid response from Elk Grove brought an additional Engine and Truck Company bringing the total number of Fire Fighters to 47.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, portable space heaters cause a disproportionate share of the home-heating fire deaths annually. Space heaters were involved in 25 percent of the home heating fires and 74 percent of the deaths. It is believed these statistics exist because portable heaters are placed too close to combustible objects and people have to take a more active role in their operation as opposed to built in home heating systems.
