| SACRAMENTO – At 5:35 p.m. this evening the Sacramento Fire Department responded to reports of a fire in the area of Windbridge Dr. and Woody Ct. As fire units approached, they reported heavy smoke and visible flames coming from a single story duplex that is situated at the reported intersection. The shake shingle roof and a light wind was creating an intense flame that rose about 25 feet off of the top of the residence. A second alarm assignment was placed bringing additional fire companies to assist in stopping the blaze. The resident of the unit that caught fire stated that he had started a fire in his fire place earlier in the evening. He said that he had thrown a couple of logs on the fire and then fell asleep on the couch. He was later awoken by knocks on the door by nearby residents telling him that his roof was on fire. A Sacramento Fire Department Investigator is currently on scene trying to confirm the cause of the fire. There were no injuries to residents or to Fire Fighters. The aggressive attack by fire companies kept the fire from spreading to the attached unit and also kept the flames from damaging too much of the contents of the affected unit. The estimated dollar loss to the structure and contents is at $100,000. The response from the Sacramento Fire Department included six Engine Companies and four Truck Companies. The Elk Grove Fire District sent one mutual aid Engine Company plus the addition Sacramento Fire Department support and command staff of eight, brought the total number of Fire Fighters to 51. With the temperatures cooling, several people will be lighting their fire places for the first time of the season. The accumulation of creosote inside of chimney stacks is flammable once it becomes hot enough to ignite. It is not uncommon for Fire Fighters to respond to chimney fires, especially early on in the season. Having chimneys swept by professionals annually will prevent these types of fires from occurring. |
