| SACRAMENTO - The Sacramento Fire Department responded to reports of smoke coming out of a roof and storefront at 4720 Franklin Blvd. this morning at 9:54 a.m. As the fire companies arrived to the newly renovated strip mall they reported black smoke pushing out of the building with pressure. Companies forced entry through storefronts and began to search for the seat of the fire. As the fire continued to grow the request of resources were made, eventually bringing the incident to four alarms.
The point of origin of the blaze is preliminarily believed to be towards the back of a business named Servicios Latinos. The fire had spread vertically, breaching through the ceiling tiles and then began to move laterally in a void space. The fire burned in the ceiling space above four additional businesses before crews were finally able to confine it and extinguish the flames. At one point during the fire, it was recognized that the direct flame impingement to attic joists began to compromise the structural integrity and there were some very large, heavy air conditioning units that were on the roof. An immediate evacuation of Fire Fighters ensued and shortly after the air conditioning units came crashing through the ceiling. Sacramento Fire Department Investigators are continuing to sift through the area of origin to collect evidence. Sacramento’s Department of Dangerous Buildings is assisting with the removal of burnt structural members during the overhaul process. The response from the Sacramento Fire Department included, eleven Engine Companies, five Truck Companies, three Battalion Chiefs and twelve additional support and command staff. The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District provided mutual aid support by responding an additional Truck Company and a Battalion Chief, bringing the total number of Fire Fighters on scene to 84. Effected businesses: 4710 Franklin - Solon De Belleza De La Rosa 4720 Franklin – Servicios Latinos 4730 Franklin – El Centro 4750 Franklin – Licas Beauty Salon 4760 Franklin – Versatil Company |
