SACRAMENTO – At 4:26 p.m. the Sacramento Fire Department was dispatched to a kitchen fire at PF Chang’s Restaurant in Downtown Sacramento. Engine Company Two arrived and reported smoke coming pumping out of the building and an evacuation in progress. A second alarm assignment was immediately placed by the Incident Commander, Battalion One. Approximately 30 customers and 20 employees had to evacuate along with the employees of Makuni’s, the adjacent sushi bar and Japanese Restaurant.

The crews made their way inside the building and were given reports from employees that there was a fire inside the kitchen area. The restaurant manager stated that he believes oil spilled over from one of the deep fryers and was ignited from the gas stove that heats the woks. The manager initiated the evacuation and attempted to douse the flames with a portable fire extinguisher. He said the flames died down but quickly took off again as the extinguisher emptied.

Sacramento Fire Department Investigators are gathering statements and will be looking through the kitchen to confirm a cause. The damage was isolated to the kitchen area in the overhead space above the commercial stoves.

The response from the Sacramento Fire Department included six Engine Companies, four Truck Companies, two Medic Units, and six command and support staff for a total of 50 Fire Fighters.
