SACRAMENTO – At 12:13 a.m. the Sacramento Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 841 42nd St. Engine Company 4 arrived to the front of the single story home and forced entry through the front door. The crew found the seat of the fire just inside the door in a front room and continued on to begin their search for anyone occupying the home. An elderly female was found in bed and pulled from the house under CPR. She was pronounced dead a short time after her arrival to a nearby hospital.

After Fire Fighters knocked down the fire and began to take a closer look at the condition of the home, they found every room to be heavily littered with debris. Piles of bottles, papers and other trash up to five feet were found inside of the home. There was also not a working smoke detector found inside of the home.

Sacramento Fire Department Investigators are unable to rule out an electrical malfunction or cigarettes as a cause of the fire. The debris that littered the home included hundreds of cigarette butts that were discarded on the floor. There were also several electrical cords that were found underneath large debris piles that may have been a source of ignition. The damage to the house and loss of contents is estimated at $85,000.

The response from the Sacramento Fire Department included three Engine Companies, two Truck Companies, one Medic Unit, and three additional command and support staff for a total of 25 Fire Fighters.
