SACRAMENTO - At 11:29 p.m. the Sacramento Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at a high rise apartment building in the downtown area. Engine and Truck Company Two arrived to the apartment as people were still evacuating and were given a report that there was smoke on the third floor. A second alarm assignment was placed to bring additional resources to the fire. On the third floor in room #309, an elderly male was pulled out of his apartment by firefighters and given immediate medical treatment. He was then transported to UC Davis Medical Center for further evaluation.

The 911 call to fire dispatchers was made by the elderly male in his apartment unit. The fire dispatchers heard an alarm sounding in the background and described the man as being disoriented. It was also undetermined as whether the man was able to get himself to safety. Fire companies responding had received this information and made a rapid response to the room where the fire was reported. Captain Charlie Sprague of Truck Company 2, and Captain Al Smoot from Engine Company 2, found the man on the ground in the room where the fire was burning. The immediately drug him out of the smoke filled environment to safety and handed him off to fire-medics on scene.

Sacramento Fire Department Investigators are continuing to gather evidence searching for the cause of the fire. It is known that the male that lived in the apartment unit is a smoker and is also on home oxygen. The estimated dollar loss from personal property and damage to the building is estimated at $25,000.

The response from the Sacramento Fire Department included nine Engine Companies, six Truck Companies, two Medic Units, and 10 command and support personnel. The same companies that made the rescue at this fire were also assigned to the five alarm fire at University Ave. just hours prior in the evening.
