SACRAMENTO - At 6:34 p.m. this evening, Sacramento Fire Department Engine Company 20 was returning from a call and noticed a column of black smoke coming from just a few blocks away. The arrived to a two story apartment building and reported a downstairs unit and two upstairs units engulfed with flames. The crew called for additional fire units to assist with the fire attack and the incident quickly escalated to a two-alarm fire.

The rapid response from Engine 20 assisted in saving several apartment units from burning. The two-story, wood-framed apartment building consisted of 22 connected units, several of which were occupied at the time of the fire. The strategy the fire crews employed was to make an aggressive attack on the second level and cut the fire off from spreading any further.

Sacramento Fire Department Investigators are currently conducting an investigation on the cause of the fire. Flames damaged three apartment units, and approximately five additional units were affected by smoke. Eight people have sought the assistance of the American Red Cross for temporary housing. The damage to the apartment building and loss of contents is estimated at $120,000. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

The response from the Sacramento Fire Department included five Engine Companies, four Truck Companies, one Medic unit and 12 additional support and command staff bringing the total to 48 Fire Fighters to the scene.
