| SACRAMENTO – This morning the Sacramento Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at “Joe Marty’s Sports Bar and Grille” located at 1500 Broadway. First arriving fire companies reported heavy black smoke and flames pushing out of the storefront that is attached to the Tower Theatre. A second and third alarm was immediately called for to bring fire resources to the scene.
A cook at “Joe Marty’s” stated he arrived to work at 5:30 a.m. and set off a couple of aerosol bug bombs in the upper storage area of the restaurant. About 20 minutes later he heard a popping noise and went to investigate. He found a fluorescent light fixture on the ceiling that had caught fire and attempted to extinguish the flames with a portable fire extinguisher. The flames spread too quickly for the extinguisher to douse and the employee had to leave the building. Sacramento Fire Department Investigators are continuing up on the physical evidence and interviews to confirm the story of the employee. Smoke damage has spread to adjacent business’s including the Tower Theatre and the Tower Café. The estimated dollar loss including property and contents is estimated at $250,000. The response from the Sacramento Fire Department included seven Engine Companies, five Truck Companies, two Medic Units, and 14 additional command and support staff bringing the total to 66 fire fighters. |
